Formosan Cypress Chapan
This piece is made from salvaged Formosan cypress (Chamaecyparis formosensis), an endangered native tree favored for its stability, rot resistance, and pleasant aroma. Its straightforward, solid design features finger-miter corner joints in the base and splined miter joinery in the lid. Water is collected in a stainless steel pan mounted into the main box, removing the possibility of leaky wood joints over time. Draining surface (lid panel) measures 8x12 inches. This is easily a 30-year chapan, and is expected to darken with use over time.
